Post Mortem
The tree stands tall
with its branches and crest lopped off
(consequently suitable for a telegraph pole)
the shadow at right angles to the ruts
(consequently carts have travelled over the dirt road)
the soldier lies parallel to the ruts
(consequently at right angles to the shadow of the bare tree)
face in the dust
fingers clawed deep into the gravel
(he consequently dragged himself upon his belly to the shade)
no
the sun may have come round
turning the shadow at right angles to the soldier
maybe shortly he will hold in each hand
the shadow of a white insulator
(and consequently
where were
you
when he was being killed?)
