A man who soars heroic in my mind
is Mr Spencer.
I see him now, in a dining room
off an older Leeds,
moustached and short, in a wash off brown content.
Behind his Bradford coat the Barnsley fire
roars its wall of heat.
Ham, cheese, Yorkshire cake and a light bright sponge
tea the red table,
where wifely confidence is in control.
He relates transactions of the morning
with a spry finger.
‘He’ll do all right. He’s got a good idea.
A sound investment.’
Head nods stoutly to the golden years.
And was it really so? It is now - is it not?
