More on Arthur Moyse
“….Blues for Moysey! Met him 1960’s at H.P. Corner & in Anarchist Bookshop W. London & at some events. He both scared & delighted me — in that insidious, hugely dominant trench coat —the man who knew too much. He caught me on paper a few times, & to good effect.” —Chris Torrance
“….went to post-humans exhib of work of Yorkshire Surrealist Tony Earnshaw …. included a selection from Earnshaw’s personal collection of other artists’ work, and one was a ‘portrait’ of Earnshaw & his wife done by Arthur Moyse — caption said Moyse, tho he corresponded w. the Earnshaws, had never met them or even seen a photo of ’em, & did the portrait totally from his imagination of what they aught to look like!” —Steve Sneyd
“Arthur Moyse’s paintings are now in a legal limbo. It turns out that he fashioned an home-made will and forged mine and Peter Good’s signatures as witnesses. Forged them so badly that they don’t stand up to any kind of serious legal scrutiny and its unlikely that the document can be actualised by his executor. I would have expected him normally to execute a good forgery job (I’m sure he had plenty of our signatures to go at) and surprised they were so bad. It could be that one of his visiting drinking friends did it for him. He had stopped drawing and painting some time ago; which suggests that the essential physical skills were then beyond him. If only he had got a couple of the sensible, reliable friends he had in London to sign any home-made document he might contrive, there wouldn’t have been a problem. His mistake (if mistake) was to make me and Good beneficiaries. The legal intervention and investigation was then inevitable. His distant cousin may hopefully get control (and may choose to distribute the paintings and books to the galleries and libraries that Arthur intended ). Otherwise everything will go to the State (in practical terms the Monarchy). Which could mean his books and graphics going into some municipal land-fill sight; without anyone knowing this had been done.” -Dave Cunliffe
