Biology 2
(poem 4)
Where is Leviathan the humpbacked singer,
who stove the boats in his massive innocence?
Where are the eels who travelled to Sargasso
each year; such a long way to die?
Where the fine isinglass, the streaming bodies
apt to the seas' movement; where are the seas?
What is become of the dark bats flaking
like ash off the evening; what of the drifts
of butterflies? And the brittle-boned lords
of lift, calling, wheeling, balancing,
who had the freedom of the empty country.
Where are the sky's tenants; where is the sky?
Whose eyes now will see fox fur glitter
like quartz; who will hold the frail bodies
of moles? The garden is going back,
lovely even in ruin, but the stewards
are gone who knew what it once was
and whose memories were its only glass.
