The Day Before
ends with a pheasant
crouched on top of the hedge.
She can be seen from a bedroom
from the conservatory
the porch.
She is there a half-hour later
an hour
silhouetted against the clearing sky
sitting where she can see
both the house
and the emptied fields to the horizon.
A white hat
decorated with a faded Southern Cross
hunches on the table
left
as if it will some day be needed.
It has metal eyelets
for sweat to evaporate
a small brim to shield the eyes
with stitches round the edge
five to the inch and nearby
his gardening gloves.
The bird is still
as if whittled out of wood.
She will go after we close the curtains
though pheasants sometimes come back.
