Little Miss Smart Arse
You never said it but I saw you think
Little Miss Smart Arse a hundred times.
I took you places, picked you up,
gave you presents on your birthday,
tried so hard. Little Miss Smart Arse.
You made us laugh. You were so funny:
excoriating. I wept with laughter, wished
you would like me, offered more gifts,
talked too much, drove right to your door
but not in. When you left I was sorry.
I wanted to tell you, quickly, quickly,
something unclever, something to show you
we could have been friends
if your mouth hadn't said: "Cheerio. Merry Christmas"
just as my head mouthed: Little Miss Smart Arse.
