2001
I must have been reading the wrong books.
I’ve no sense of the numinous.
There’s a rational explanation for everything:
lightning, lilies, viruses,
the bullet’s ricochet, cancer,
even chaos.
Ask me to pray and I think of Sunday School.
I’d hold back my collection money
for six penn’orth of lemonade powder.
After I got divorced I read about Gizeh where
the heiroglyphed walls of a plundered chamber
prophesied the world’s fate.
It was all there: earthquake, plague, crucifixion,
the split atom, moon landing, climate change,
coming to an abrupt end at 2001.
I like to think they simply ran out of wall.
