Some of Us
Some of us have given up
on trying to find a place in the world
and have settled for a place
to hide.
Outside the bar
at Jones and Ellis
a light rain falls
reflecting off headlights
in the orange half-light that comes
between the evening and the day.
A man stands in the doorway
smoking,
staring out into it.
Hey, he says,
there’s some guy out there,
he ain’t moving, he’s just
lyin’ there.
Look, he says,
I bet somebody just popped ‘im!
The man in the doorway
seems more amused than
concerned
as he cups his hand
and lights another cigarette.
Already sirens are screaming
from blocks away
as some of us get up to have a look
and some of us don’t.
