Falling on Deaf Ears
I speak words
Mouth them at your green eyes
The search for
Signs of comprehension.
All is blankness
A struggle to understand.
I cross the space between us
Slide my voice inside
The warmth of your ear
Push consonants and vowels
Down tubes and canals
To the inmost coils of the cochlea.
My voice sounds loud
Or just a whisper
But your voice,
That comes out as a shout,
Is it quiet inside you?
