Beware
Stop!
Beware of hummingbirds,
a fly licking itself,
beware of it all, of wood chips
that fail to burn, unmatched silverware,
plastic heirlooms - stay!
A closet's emptiness,
think about the absent clothes.
Unused rooms, half-opened doors,
shafts of light draped on furniture,
falling onto the floor -
think, think of it all,
the spirea beside the front porch,
a spiderweb, firewood, last night's mementoes.
Tiptoe,
tiptoe past the habitual.
If necessary, pedantic in conversation.
Avoid those effusive greetings,
disregard each day's ending.
Again, beware of it all,
of forgetfulness, of bliss.
Act,
act as if
driftwood was nomenclature,
stars
momentary.
