Nocturnal
The fox patrols its frozen circuits
then slows, to nuzzle a breeze.
A birdless moonless sky, split only
by the silent flicker and swerve
of a bat, sweeping the frequencies.
Flushed in the fire’s afterglow, you turn
and settle with the silhouettes.
No sound disturbs your sleep.
No owl, no engine ticking over.
Traffic lights change for empty streets.
The river stumbles, holds,
glazed with intricate designs:
morning’s wonder, as the earth pursues
our smooth rotation to the light.
