Leaving
She tells me
how after dropping me off at the station
she’d walk Gippeswick Park for hours
rather than face the empty house.
And I remember the time
she was helping me lift my bags,
heavy with books, onto the luggage rack,
when the train pulled out,
and her laugh filled the carriage
as she fell into the seat opposite me.
For half an hour, till the next stop,
she held my hand across the table,
watched the hedges and fields rush by,
our faces together in the tunnels.
