Wild Rose
Rose of the Russian nation
you are frosty and wayward
like poetry and prose
in a locomotive’s furnace
like
disaster under the big top
rose breaking out
rose of the Russian nation
thorn of the heart
rose of the Russian nation
mustn’t pluck you with the hands
tread you under foot
you’re armed with teeth
you’re made of rose flesh
all silence and menace
no metempsychosis in you
a direct route to the heavens you are
of early morning neurosis
filled with an inner luminescence –
like the wonderful and dazzling
moment – Rose
