Seventy Thousand Hillbillies
Arkansas
Even the professors down here
drive pickups to class,
have names like Mary Sue or Billy Bob,
Clinton voters, they're no rednecks.
Maybe it's protective
local coloring, hedged in by
the Survivalists out in the bush
with their razor-wire,
booby traps and bunkered arsenals:
plugged into Revelations
like country music on a Walkman, they're
less into the lex talionis
than the preemptive strike.
I see a rear-window sticker Nuke
The Whales, then a personalised
registration plate INSANE.
In Craighead County, one
professor tells me, Billy Hill's
a common name. Look in the directory,
he says, there are
thirty, forty. They're all
listed as Hill, Billy.
He leans to scratch his shin
above the Wolverine boot, times
it, grins, and says The truth is there
are hell of a lot more than that.
