Indonesian Musicians at the World's Fair, Paris, 1889
What rite that passage through innocent seas
would launch, what mud, what agony would accompany
its longing for older, far-off shores
where, from under the banana and
the mango tree, from under that steep
blue Balinesian sky, they beat
with a furious delicacy the air, the force
of their percussion caught in the ear
of Europe, as it sat and listened
and waited – waited, and waited, till it
knew that something was being abandoned.
A melody in fragments, unable to go home.
Dark pastoral. Cobblestone through a window.
All the bells in the belfries of each small town
tolling the fading Angelus. Outside, a crazed
wind in the trees, tearing up the score.
