The Moral Question
On a picnic they saw it.
Look at that, cried one of the boys.
Dad gave a grunt, parked the car,
demanded his net.
You’re not going to ... said his wife.
I certainly am.
But we’re having a …
I know that.
The moral question, sensing a bit of fun,
tilted a wing-tip towards the sun.
Dad fell for it. Cheeky little bugger, he muttered;
twenty minutes later, though, came back, panting.
There you are, he said, net neatly folded over
a fluttering on the grass.
That’s a moral question, that is.
We’ll have a look at him later -
not one of your common-or-garden questions.
Like, said mum, do you want marmite or jam?
