Medieval Wall Painting, Oakwood Hill Chapel
A leak of light
through granite-coloured glass
ignites remnants of paint.
St Christopher strides into a muttered service,
his colours primary as miracles.
The light spur goes.
Though there’s a spirit to alabaster earls,
without St Christopher
the church can’t hold the jewel of us.
Whenever light touches sides or lid
of this jack in the box,
its friction whirrs belief,
flaking on the rugged stone,
up across a dazzling shoulder
muscled with orange and blue.
