Coup de Foudre
peu après Laforgue
When the bolt struck I did not rush to the window
to see the bystander’s hair unmanned and helpless,
the Galapagos of upturned turtles,
the avenue’s implacable black buckle,
river and rise, rowboats at rooflines,
the eggs of inspiration agape beside
the broken-winged bindings of consummation,
the apocalypse sprung full-blown from the word.
When the blind light came out of that nowhere
like an original thought, startling and unlikely,
shaken out of the sky like foreign money
into the grass among the table crumbs
I sat here unreading the same sentence
in which I’d found the letters of your name.
Liane Strauss’ poems have appeared in various magazines here and in the USA. A selection of her work is included in the forthcoming anthology, The Like Of It (Baring and Rogerson 2005).
