A Sense Of Direction
coming out of the theatre
I always follow the horses
the yellow dust they kick up
billows about me like talcum
later there will be silhouettes
of cactus and a ring of stars
and in the distance the mesa
a tableland under a purple sky
in some narrow gulch that way
lies the one I should rescue
hands roped behind her back
teeth biting into a red bandana
wriggling like a gingham rattlesnake
towards the muddy waterhole
the other way is cold and grey
with dark harmonies of meters
four squares and new worlds
damp footpaths and angle parking
no one at all to rescue
just a reflection in plate glass
not much choice really
but to follow that corona of stars
the clip clop of dreams
