There is a City
where the boys on street corners
wait for a stranger driving by,
step in front of the car,
smile at the frightened driver
too scared to move
except to wind the window down
when a boy pounds the roof
with his tattooed fist.
In that part of the city
boys reach inside the car
for the driver’s wallet,
his signet ring, the watch
given by his wife at christmas,
see him whimper like a kid.
In the silent hour before dawn,
when they find themselves alone,
the boys dream of a car that belongs to them,
of driving down a street
where the girls might turn their heads to look,
where the nights go by
and nobody ever gets shot,
not even for crossing the line,
or grassing to the frightened cops.
