His Wives, Their Gifts
Only the second remains; the others
fade. (Mercifully,
in the case of Wife No 4.)
They hardly had a chance: up against
his long hate-affair with himself.
His first wife gave me
ear-rings I still wear. His third
a salve for gardening-hands – the best.
His second wife gave us
the boys, and moments still clutched
for happiness. A picnic
by a splashing river. Pumpkin ice-cream
in blue bowls and a child’s courtesy. The evening
a silent adolescent played his guitar.
