Hitman
A masked
lone gunman
was spotted running away
from the scene
in the autumn dusk,
running away from the body
shot twice in the head,
neighbours are watching T.V.
and only hear backfires
as he runs over wasteground
on the council estate
a sawn-off in his waistband,
and keeps on running
there is no getaway car,
but see how his hand
now slaps his hip
urging his horse on
and how the other grips
reins tight in front
as they gallop and leap
breath whinnying,
then come to open fields
and he slows to a trot,
dismounts and pats
the sweating flanks
before leaving the horse
tied to a fence post
secure in the knowledge
that it will never be found.
