Staying Where You Are
I know exactly where I am.
Doing my homework
with one eye on Dr. Kildare.
It freezes a moment in a house
where the settee refused to leave
by the usual route and had to be coaxed
out of a window;
must have built it round the bugger,
they said tugging and heaving.
I had a photo taken in a deckchair
in the middle of Winter. Cross-legged
in black and white, I fold my hands
like a model in a magazine article
on How to dress for an interview
and smile the smile I hope
will win the heart of Jean-Claude
who writes to me from Chalon.
It is the end of innocence, the start
of all that is terrible and real. It pours,
unstoppable, onto that white dress.
