Trying to Hide
The hardest thing
is not lifting
bunches of your own hair
to throw in the waste-bin -
pulled out by the maths teacher
for raising his blood pressure.
It isn’t trying to avoid
the glinting point
at the end of McFall’s
sharpened metal comb
in the school-yard.
Nor concealing a few
crumpled Woodbine butts
some loose matches
in your blazer pocket
from the cigarette-mad
English teacher.
No, the hardest thing
is trying to hide
the red flea-bites
on your belly and thighs
when changing for P.E.
