Some Information about Myself
I was born in Moscow in 1921, and in 1939, as a first year student at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute, I was drafted into the army. I was demobilised in December 1947. In 1945, as a Soviet Army English language interpreter, I served in Manchuria; in 1946, with my French, in French Indochina (now Vietnam); in 1947, again with my English, in Seoul with the Soviet-American Joint Commission on Korea.
In the nearly thirty years that I have spent outside Russia, my work has been published in New York, Belfast and Paris. I emigrated from Moscow in 1972. For a while I was a Russian newscaster and translator in the BBC, and for thirteen years I taught Russian language and poetry at Manchester. As a graduate of the Foreign Languages Institute in Moscow, I taught German there for many years; I also taught English at Moscow University and was an editor and educational film director for Foreign Language Studies. I worked on equirhythmic translations for Muzgiz (Music Publishing House) from Goethe, Schiller, Heine, Eichendorff and other German poets, for vocal works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert and Medtner. I also translated Russian poets into German. My translations of Celtic folk songs were published by the same house.
In 1999, Iskustvo Kino (Cinema Art) published a novel of mine in which, as the poet says, I pulled a small thread out of the fabric of my life. Since retiring from Manchester University in 1988, I have been teaching Russian at Manchester High School for Girls.
