In China
After Max Jacob
Les Buttes-Chaumont painted on a screen, it is China. Four Europeans threatened with hanging are led to the beams every morning politely. That rarely happens. A housewife who pours my coffee looks more at me than at the cup; even so not one drop falls to the side.
The French Ambassador and the muezzin are rivals in reticence and silences. All is tidy and proper as in paradise. It is only appearance.
