Message
The night you killed yourself the duty nurse phoned.
She swore she’d left a message on my machine.
So after I’d heard officially, replaying my messages -
your voice - You say the day. I’ll be there.
The summer exhibition or Brighton Rock at the I.C.A.
I can’t decide; I’m taken with smoke filled clouds
travelling aimlessly across pure cold and pale skies.
Wendy French’s pamphlet collection, Sky Over Bedlam, was published in 2002. She will appear in the forthcoming Poetry School anthology, Entering the Tapestry.
