Invisible Ink
Watching our quiet affronted neighbour
slap loud white paint across obscenities
scrawled on his backyard gate,
I imagine all those unseen silent figures,
their spraycan shadows shouting
from walls, bridge-spans, old garage doors.
There’s something I admire about them,
though I’ve never ventured further
than a scratched desk top myself
and once was made to eat
the whole page of invective
I’d scribbled through an RI. lesson.
But it’s never been for me,
hanging upside down from a motorway bridge
to write Tories Out or Free Mandela.
I stay at home, silent and unseen,
and as you turn your back
to read the Sunday paper
or reach to put your cup down on the floor,
my finger traces words across your skin
I’d never dare say to your face.
