The Stones
He climbs,
pulled by old whispers,
through farmland luxury
to the woods, where oaths
are earthen, narrow,
and the tight twigs twist
above them, to impose
an always dark.
He watches
the river, distanced,
and animal-bulk
in a long slow lurch
to the concrete claws,
crumpled and tank-deprived.
A Summer lightning
leaps the valley.
He hears
the brutal motorway
and growling lorries
as they grab the hill.
Horizon chimneys
give them emphasis,
prodding and fluffing
in the burning sky.
He waits
among the stones.
They crouch before him,
tensing and ready
for new soils to rear
in black reconquest.
‘So you’re back again.’
‘Can’t keep away.’
