Salad for Lunch
She prises the lettuce from the soil,
lifts it to her face - it smells of wet -
strips away its yellowed leaves and,
with a deft twist, wrenches off the root.
As its thin sap runs and bleeds
she thinks how plants might feel, have needs,
is certain she has heard them scream.
