Abagee's Thekan
(My Father's Shop)
Look, these fat aubergines gleam
With a violet South African light
Seldom seen in Rusholme: plaited
With endless bushes of coriander.
It has that frail luminous feel of Israeli air
Heaped among the melons, those near perfect suns.
It is a light granulated
Into millions of milky Basmati grains;
Clumped solid into tough cloves of Spanish garlic.
No two shades of yellow, nourished by the same sun,
Grown on any branch of any tree are ever the same.
Mangoes from Bombay are fit to burst
With different stories of the same summer.
St Lucian bananas promise hot
Secluded beaches and a cool coral sea.
Last night’s torrential rain
Has left contours of the Sahara desert
Across our window-sills and cars.
