Separate Paths
There were days when she loved him enough
to go to the woods,
leave after half an hour
having done it at least twice.
She admired his jacket, loaded with studs,
which he trailed through grass
like a thick black tongue.
He adored her creased school-skirt
and her mouth that wouldn’t say good bye
as they left by separate paths.
