Twins
I always wanted to be a twin. The Lemonade Man
delivered sticky Tizer, ginger beer,
called me and my brother the twins, although
I was the big sister. We were welded
together when the new baby died.
I behaved as well as I knew how, but
started to wheeze and get anxious about toilets,
he was moody, prone to attacks of colic.
On Saturday nights, one of my aunts recalls,
when the grown-ups played poker at our kitchen table
they could hear my brother rocking on his bed
and me running backwards and forwards to the bathroom.
We had no idea that our twin faces might be loathsome
or that a good dead baby always comes first.
