And the Girls Made Jam
vats of it: boiling, bubbling messes
like cauldrons of rich animal blood,
sinister, syrupy exploding sweetnesses
spitting out blobs on the cringing white stoves
like snarling cats on heat.
Such steaming anarchy threatens the system.
Cool it down, seal sparkling jars in a pantry,
food for the vicar and old ladies,
spread on sweet scones or toasted teacakes,
filling a sponge in a cake competition.
Jam and Jerusalem, English home cooking;
sweetness and innocence, harmless as Eve.
