Anise Koltz, born in Luxembourg in 1928, first wrote in German. After the death of her husband, a late victim of the Nazi occupation, she found she could no longer do so. After a long period of silence, she began to write again, but almost exclusively in French. She has also written children’s books in Luxembourgish.
A poet of international renown, Koltz actively promotes the literature of Luxembourg. She founded and, from 1963 to 1974, directed the Journées littéraires de Mondorf which brought together writers from all over the world, with the aim of establishing and maintaining links between the Luxembourg and the international literary scene. In 1995, the Mondorf Literary Days were revived and represented all genres, thereby providing a wide range of authors with a platform for their works.
Koltz is a member of the Académie Mallarmé (Paris), Pen-Club Belgium, and Institut Grand-Ducal des Arts et des Lettres (Luxembourg). She is one of the founding members of The European Academy of Poetry. Over the years she has collaborated with poets, writers and artists to create bibliophilic editions, had a variety of works dedicated to her, and had poems set to music. She continues to be honoured with prestigious awards. Translations of her poetry have appeared in Belgium, Colombia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Portugal, Rumania, Spain and Sweden. In the UK, At the Edge of Night (a collection of poems from four of her books and translated by Anne-Marie Glasheen) was published by ARC Visible Poets in 2009.
