Reading
(for Milena, aged six and a half)
I came upon you as St Augustine
came upon St Ambrose -
his eyes scanned the page
and his heart explored the meaning
but his voice was silent
and his tongue was still -
it was Enid Blyton
and you were far too old
to pretend in turning pages
but your voice was
silent and your tongue was
still, deep into
your newest secret
which took you
where even echoes
would not bring you back.
