Deaf Aid
Now should I write about my Dad
The troubles that he had
The squeaks and squeals
The sighs, the groans
The puzzled looks from all around
The puzzled looks from Him?
For Dad was deaf, profoundly so,
He heard through a machine
And all was fine and all was clear
When that machine was clean.
But sometimes it was dusty
At other times quite damp
And much the hardest time was when
The batteries went low amp.
The troubles that he had
The squeaks and squeals
The sighs, the groans
The puzzled looks from all around
The puzzled looks from Him?
For Dad was deaf, profoundly so,
He heard through a machine
And all was fine and all was clear
When that machine was clean.
But sometimes it was dusty
At other times quite damp
And much the hardest time was when
The batteries went low amp.
Doreen Gray writes:
At Geoff Jones' recent (Cannon Poets) workshop on writing humorous poetry, the question arose as to whether any topics should be 'off limits' for this type of verse. For instance, should one write poems about disability? I'm not sure we came to any conclusions but I was prompted to write something about my father's deafness which had a profound effect on my childhood. In those days 'hearing aids' were not freely available on the NHS - interesting times in more ways than one.
The first of these offerings is the verse I penned at Geoff's worksop. The second is one I think I'd been trying to write for some time.
