My son on horseback
For years, you had been coming,
the horse trotting at first
before hazarding a canter
and finally galloping,
beating hills with his hooves,
desperate to reach me.
I hadn’t yet caught sight of your face
but I knew you were there,
gripping flanks with your thighs, mane with
your fists.
You were coming towards me
and I couldn’t see you
but I heard the hooves.
At night, they were all that I heard,
drowning the traffic outside the window.
I sometimes wished that beast would stop,
graze nonchalantly
before turning tail and taking you back
to the place where you were
before I knew you, before I heard your
insistent breath.
When you came to me finally,
you had no hair
and the horse had gone
but I knew you at once.
