Bluebell Time
Out where the new leaf gives a warm colour
bluebells are the botanonym of cool.
On hot days we want to stop and drink from them
like marathon runners.
For something stronger the poison bottle blue
of nightshade, for something more fugitive
the monk’s hood blue of aconite.
Out in the deep viridian and oxide
of chromium. Where shadow
darkens the palette, we breathe in
the powder of blue.
For something richer the royal blue
of iris. For something gentler
the naïve blue of cornflower.
And so to bluebells. Like portraits
of long-forgotten winners from the past
when the year moves on to lilies. And to roses.
