Julian's Cat
Eccentric, to have made this choice:
have walls for company,
her own small breath.
But to take a cat in!
To embrace its skinny warmth
to take it in and feed it,
stroking its dumb head until purring started
and then to stroke its head some more,
its cheeks, its chin,
to make it her companion,
this was reminiscent of the pharaohs,
almost heathen.
Julian knew that the bishop
had her down as mad -
all those visions -
that fires across Christendom
were licking through heretics,
that a believer today
could be tallow tomorrow.
But the cat stayed.
