Even today,
when the hurt we give each other
rendered us brittle as dead leaves,
and as separate,
a word arriving on our lips
at the same moment
affirmed us - as happens often
but was unlooked-for then.
It was as if a hidden watercourse
had blessed us, bubbling
briefly up into the light;
or as if a goldfinch
had darted down to take a grain
from each of us: a split
second of all the difference
brushing your hand and mine.
