They line it up for me
and I am in a kittiwake’s nest
on Kettleness Nab with skinny chicks
and a screaming mother who squashes me
with her warm breast. One jerk
and I’ve lost her. I’m flying now
past a lone fishing-boat,
lobster nets on a slipway
to a sandy beach where a man
who could be my uncle Frank
rows a broken dinghy.
On, on it goes until I reach
two figures on a rock. My eyes
can’t focus. I think I see two
but they collide and separate
and merge again almost as though
they can’t make up their minds.
Only the barnacles are clear
and the green bottle on the rock.
Then with a clunk the shutter drops
and there is only the pier
and the painted mine and a queue
of children who will see something different.
