Broadcast
The boulevards are arrows of enlightenment
shot from a bow three hundred years before:
this street issues out of its successor with Cartesian
logic; things cannot be other than what they are.
With sudden light, humankind will right itself:
the promise is pooled down from the lamps.
And when it does, when superstition lapses,
the chill of Voltaire's truths finally permitted
and that excellent people have often lived here,
and that we might everywhere be as great again,
on diet of Diderot, diet of Condorcet -
some President or other will go on TV and admit:
“This good thing happened because of Paris,
because of Paris, because of a place called Paris.”
