After Rain
The dampness
Of close-packed soil
Underfoot;
The glistening branches
And, somewhere,
A steady drip;
And us alone
In a private world.
A withered tree
Henry Moore would
Have approved catches
Our eyes - at one
with the gently
Breathing wood
And all its pulsing
Undergrowth; we advance
In wonder, do not allow
Our voices to intrude
The doves’ persistent
Evensong; sense
Ourselves privileged
Passers through this place
One curious summer evening
After rain.
