Untitled
Even in daylight the sky
eaten by wires
and that ravenous scent
its colors have always lured
from half a world away - within inches
my hand almost touches the claws
the music that eagle
never heard before
though it isn't scared off
the brittle reds and snow
- the camera crew I don't see
cares about it, they slow its wings
for something near, each powerful stroke
more time to lift the lifeless snake
while the skin pulled to the bone
leaps from my fingertips.
I've learned to send back the sounds
so there will be more for others
or later or all that goes on in a flower
that can be traced to a cry close by
- the swallowing, the fragrance
turned back and for a while the screen
stays warm, believes itself alive
pulling me closer, dusting my fingers
with that same darkness room to room
and doors that never close, that feed
this emptiness, a few snapshots
framed certificates, thorns
- even in the daytime I feel my way
along this wall that still believes
those cries were its own
how everything dead wants to be fed
by that simple touch they remember
as roots and lips - even within inches
losing the way for later.
