'2 Become 1'
In the newly-opened Virgin
there’s a video playing Lady
and the Tramp, silently, incongruous
with This is Hardcore: we join
it at the moment when the Tramp
leads the dog-catcher a merry
dance over and back a three
foot fence, the chase leading him
as we know to Snob Hill or, as the Bulldog
with the gor-blimey accent has it
later, Miss Park Avenue ‘erself.
You know by now this is my way
of saying sorry for having no money,
by spending money on something
we don’t need and are only 60%
certain we like. I don’t know
what it’s called I stumble, before
delivering it, note-perfect, to the smiling
assistant and queue of one goth and two
truanting nine-year-olds, red
with embarrassment: It’s for a friend.
