Cosmic Child
All the elements combined to make me,
thing of weight and sight and sound,
all the throbbing oceans of the world
sweep my veins to chase the moon around.
Between the green and blue I learned to crawl,
my playpen Earth. Its pretty toys outwrought
I watch the coloured planets on their threads
of ordered forces swinging for my sport.
They laugh and glitter to my childish eye
so I would catch them and, beyond, the stars:
‘Mine!’ I cry, and ‘Mine!’ and ‘Mine!’
and ‘MINE!’
pulling myself erect by Heaven’s bars.
Wild claim. Before this hand can overreach
to tear apart the structuring of day
the Hand I have discounted need but stir
for the long winds to blow my dust away.
