Ruelle des Solitaires
The alleyway
slopes diagonally down
from Claremont Road to Eldon Street.
It has been remaindered from another age,
its high walls and cobblestones
good for a film set.
Guests walking home late at night,
from one of the tall Edwardian houses
are out of James Joyce's 'The Dead'.
A doctor carrying a Gladstone bag
is hurrying away from 'Brief Encounter'
and a soldier in battledress from 'The Wooden Horse'.
But it's the concertmaster with the violin
who brings that note of sadness in
when he draws a thousand solitary lives to one.
