Thoughts of Summer
The man across the road from me’s a spy.
He hangs his tea-towels on the line in coded sequence:
blue, white, butterflies of the United Kingdom, blue.
Posters have gone up advertising some unknown singer
who looks like George Best but surely isn’t.
Arthur moans about the council. Says the Titanic
has more chance of resurfacing than our road.
He says it often, but then it is his best joke.
I study your photo through a magnifier.
When the first hot sun of summer comes
I set your hair on fire.
