Our Garden
A headquarters should insects
take over the world. So
neighbours thought. Infestation
a term not in their vocabulary,
or they’d have used it.
Adding unheard of names
to their gardener’s black book
of weeds in season,
we had dandelion clocks
enough to give the time
to everybody on the estate.
Since then some new method-
man has reordered the riot;
put the littleness of neat lawns
and a herbaceous border
where the largeness of Nature was.
Today, no Peacocks in all
their gaudiness swim out
of my pigmy rainforest
lovely for crawling games -
just a few moony Whites
testing the insipid nectar
before drifting unsatisfied away.
